Chinese Facial Massage & TMJ Techniques with Debbie DeNardo

Instructor: Debbie DeNardo LMT; NCBTMB #452031-12

Stress is reflected in the face when facial muscles become tense and tighten. Unconsciously, we contort our face and creases appear across the surface of the skin as the pressures of the day intensify. This class is a blend of Chinese and Western techniques. Techniques are learned and experienced that help tone, uplift, remove tension, reduce facial lines and increase circulation to the face. Facial massage can benefit Bells Palsy, facial tics, eye droop, sinus problems, eyesight (near and far) and TMJ problems.

The treatment begins by targeting specific pressure points on the face without the use of lotion or oil--engaging 25 pressure points (including 2 on the hands) as taught by Dr. Lilly Fu, a Chinese doctor, to Lolita Knight (who has certified Debbie DeNardo). This not only relaxes the facial muscles but stimulates the lymph drainage system, thereby removing excess fluid and waste products.

The honey pat sequence involves the application of pure honey, a natural product which is a humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture. The techniques in this sequence help increase skin circulation, plump fine lines and improve overall skin tone.

Non-invasive, external TMJ techniques work to reduce jaw pain and increase mandible mobility. According to the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, "As high as 20% of the American population possesses one or more of the symptoms of a temporomandibular disorder.” The TMJ techniques in this course are effective and easy to learn.

Rejuvenation and relaxation strokes (with the use of another natural product, macadamia nut oil) further relieve tension in the face, smooth away lines and bring elasticity back to the skin.

Facial massage is an excellent addition to your massage offerings. It can be added in full or in part at the end of a massage therapy session for a pampering conclusion. This course is suitable for massage therapy students as well as seasoned massage therapists and estheticians who would like to expand their repertoire and boost their income. It is a great idea to offer this service as gift certificates for Mother’s Day, Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day and other special occasions.

This is a hands-on workshop with demonstration and practice. Participants will examine each other while looking in a mirror before the facial massages so that "before and after" comparisons can be made. They often notice a difference in their appearance at the end of the class session with major differences usually noticed two days after treatment. At the completion of this workshop you will be able to perform a Chinese Facial Massage and with the hands-on experience will also know how it feels to receive one.

Note: This class contains different material than the "Facial Fusion Massage" class. Combining techniques of both Chinese Facial Massage and Facial Fusion Massage allows therapists to offer their clients a more customized facial massage. Although each class offers its own facial massage treatment plan, segments from each can be blended into a separate tailor-made treatment that can differ between clients based on their needs.
